Mark: “Well I’ll see what I can do hopefully I get there…”
Chris: “see ya mate”
After the girls victory the boys were hungry for some of the limelight! However Flinders had fielded a serious team, boosted with some ABA goodness. Toby (light-weight) Lightheart, Dave (layup-bandit) Scroggs, Jeremey (Mr Basketball) Cotterill, Mark (bank my free throws) Scopacasa and William (Non-Griffin) Bruce took to the floor leaving Chris McMichael on the bench, basking in the glory of his coaching victory, Mark Proctor was still somewhere between the city, Flinders Uni and his mums house. Game –on!!!!!!
First Half:
The Griffins Toby Light’d it up! – making it rain down on Flinders home court and their ego’s. 14 odd points in the first quarter indicated who our go to guy was – or did it? Trailing by 11, Flind
ers switched defense to a box & 1 to guard Toby. This didn’t slow the griffins down as Chris found his range from the corners, Dave was out on the break and Will was everywhere else!
Quarter time saw, Mark turn up with his mum’s car, Flinders get angry and the Griffins holding a small lead.
Out of the break flinders kicked it up. Penetration and some outside shooting put the griffins under pressure however our efforts in the open floor thanks to Jeremy and Dave kept the score tight.
By half time (due to a banked, halfway, buzzer beater hoo
k shot- with a hand in the face) the griffins were now trailing.
Second Half:
The game kicked up a notch as the lead bounced between the teams. With all griffins contributing and Flinders not feeling the range the griffins looked strong. Then disaster struck our in-your-face defender, Will Bruce. A knock in the open court put him out of action for the rest of the game. Griffins were down to 6 players…
With all of 6-9 Mark Proctor taking up space in the key the griffins decided to win it off the glass allowing F
linders to ping as many 3’s as they wanted.
The griffins dug deep taking tactical timeouts to give players a rest and rotating our only sub. The game was tight, tension was in the air, UniSA were doing their warm ups and the griffins were down by 1. The baseline in our 2-3 zone were under the pump as flinders jumped at every rebounding opportunity but we held strong and with 1:30 left we took the lead…
Last 1 minute 30 seconds:
Bang – 3 pointer from Flinders. The lead was clawed back through tight D and patient offence.
Bang – another 3 form Flinders. Pressure on, Toby double teamed in the paint desperate outlet to Mark Scopacasa in the corner – don’t look now… swish 3!!!
But he didn’t stop there…. 30 seconds to go… shot up Griffins scrap for offensive rebound, dumped inside to … guess who… Scopa! Under the ring, shot up, fouled AND 1 BABY!!!
Griffins up by 2, Mark at the line – THUD*1 (backboard)… splash (net)- Griffins up by 3.
Timeout, Flinders 25 seconds to play. Inbound from the half, 3 point attempt, rebound griffins.
Long pass and out of bounds Griffins end, Flinders ball (2.7 seconds on clock)…
Flinders inbound pass long, Siren sounds (while ball in air) and goes out of bounds!!!
Griffins win… not if flinders had anything to do with it……. After minutes of bitching they get the ball back with longer on the clock because the clock started early??? WTF ???
Anyway – Smothering Griffin defense avoided a last second loss as the Griffins claimed victory 78-75 in what was a high quality and hotly contested encounter!!! Congratulations boys!
*1 Scopa insists he planned to hit the backboard.
Interval:
Victory beers consumed while Flinders demolished UniSA 102-71.
Match 2 Griffins V UniSA
With a victory over Super-TAFE the griffins could (like the girls) be South Australian Uni Basketball Champions – and that is exactly what happened…
The decisive 119-46 score line put Adelaide Uni firmly on top of the table.
Dave Scroggs and Jeremy Cotterill went crazy on fast breaks and Chris McMichael provided comic relief by not being able to make a layup on more than one occasion.
Most memorable moment of the match unfortunately was a UniSA player cramping in both calves simultaneously and rolling in pain on the court- poor guy.
Fifth Quarter:
Adelaide University Women – SA Challenge Champions
Adelaide University Men – SA Challenge Champions
Adelaide University – SA Challenge Champion University
Pub-crawl Celebration tomorrow!!!
